MATES provide suicide prevention through community development programmes on sites, and by supporting workers in need through Case Management and a 24/7 helpline.
The programme raises awareness and builds resilience in the construction industry by promoting help seeking and help offering behaviours, we are building the capacity for workers to support and look after each other. If you or a mate needs help you can call MATES on their helpline 0800 111 315 and visit their website www.mates.net.nz.
The amazing team at MATES also gave our team toolbox talks across all three sites in Auckland to educate what to look out for and help start the conversation about suicide prevention. Mates helping mates.
In September we also supported the annual Fly the Flag week to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention in the construction industry.
Unfortunately, there has been a staggering 175% increase in demand for food parcels this winter as the fallout of Covid-19 continues to be felt by Kiwi families.
Auckland City Mission was established in 1920 by Reverend Jasper Calder. Under Reverend Calder’s leadership, the Mission quickly grew to become one of Auckland’s most influential social service providers – and today, it still is.
The services they offer have developed over time to reflect social changes, but their purpose remains to help people in desperate need. No two clients’ stories are the same and the people who come to the Mission for help come for many different reasons; some are isolated elderly, others are rough sleepers or people living in cars and inappropriate housing. Others are battling addictions, living with mental health issues, or struggling to feed their families over a period of unexpected crisis.

As a business we believe in developing in-house potential with strong support, coaching and mentorship. That’s why we’re excited to offer our long-term backing to an organisation who share the same vision and values. Like the Blues, our goal is to cultivate an environment of success and high-performance amongst our team for the greater good of the community.
With a focus on building the Blues of tomorrow, we will become the official ‘Blues High Performance Programme’ partner, U’17, U’18s and U’20 squad teams.
In tandem, GN Construction will be offering scholarship opportunities to local talent, and seeking more ways to support community rugby in Auckland.
We see this partnership as more than just putting our logo on a jersey. It’s about a deeper level of connection between GN Construction, The Blues, and the greater Auckland community. We’ll open our doors to all Blues players to progress their careers both on, and off the field.
The similarities between construction and rugby are overt. Both involve working in close knit teams, discipline, commitment, and taking great pride in what you do.
Despite being from the wrong side of the Tasman, Mitch Blunden, GN Construction Managing Director knows all too well how important rugby is to the Auckland community.

GN are proud sponsors of this years Special Children’s Christmas Party. Every year, their event puts big smiles on over 2,000 little faces and give them a day many of them don’t normally receive, but one that they truly deserve. These kids haven’t had the best start to life, so we want to give them a day where they feel like the lucky ones for a change.
If you would also like to support the event you can find further information here: Special Children’s Christmas Party
The GN Construction team accompanied by a few of The Blues rugby players volunteered a few hours out of their day to help Sustainable Coastlines clean-up three Auckland beaches – Kohimarama, St Heliers & Ladies Bay. We love our coastlines and oceans and want them litter free, the way they should be! Unfortunately plastic pollution impacts our environment, the health of our wildlife, and human health. The team managed to collect three sacks & a tire, about 23kgs worth of litter in an hour!
Sustainable Coastlines is a registered New Zealand charity. Their mission is to enable people to look after the coastlines and waterways they love. If you would like to learn more, volunteer or donate please visit their website Sustainable Coastlines.
